SAL BAN

SAL BAN is the sound of analog machines pushed to their hypnotic limit. Play the raw oscillators of the Monolith Engine manually, or connect your local LLM via our new SAL BAN AI JAM (MCP) bridge to let an artificial mind co-produce with you in real-time.

Background Story

SAL BAN — Background Story

From Bladenight to Browser Groovebox: Three Decades of Sound Architecture

Behind SAL BAN is Matthias Köhler — musician, producer, sound architect, and an active part of the electronic music scene in southern Germany for over three decades. What lives on in 2026 as a browser-based synthesizer engine on this website is only the latest chapter of a career that runs far deeper than the currently available online discography suggests.

Over 100 Albums, Well Over 900 Songs

Across the last thirty years, more than 100 albums and over 900 individual songs have been released under the name SAL BAN and through countless collaborations. Much of this catalog is no longer findable online today — not because the music disappeared, but because the platforms themselves did. Distribution channels, download portals, and entire communities that formed the backbone of the electronic music scene in the early 2000s simply don't exist anymore.

One of the clearest examples: emusic.com, once one of the largest independent download platforms for electronic music worldwide. SAL BAN regularly held the #1 chart position there — right alongside names like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London, and Moby. Printouts of those chart placements from back then still exist as physical proof of an era that's long gone from the digital record. It's one of the odd truths of electronic music history: success isn't always reflected in the completeness of a streaming library — sometimes it only survives on yellowing paper in a drawer.

From Bladenight to a Label of His Own

The early career is closely tied to Munich's Bladenight phenomenon — the mass nighttime inline-skating events of the early 2000s, for which SAL BAN provided the soundtrack via the Bladenight Club Compilation. Through his own label, Oszillation Records, numerous further releases followed over the years: from driving techno to the unusual comedy-crossover album Verbissenlos with Munich comedian Moses Wolff, to mixing work for the acoustic trio Peace Rebel Radio.

The Sound Architect and Mentor

Alongside production, a second, equally central role has developed over recent years: that of synthesizer archivist and mentor. On YouTube (channel @minista), SAL BAN documents the sonic character of vintage and modern analog synthesizers, digital hybrids, and grooveboxes with a deliberately purist approach — no cuts, no effects, often starting right from the "init patch." What began as gear demonstrations has grown into an archive that has become a reference point for many in the international synth community.

The Present: AI, Audio Engineering, and Game Audio

The current path keeps moving forward rather than looking back. With a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and a diploma in Audio Engineering, the scope of work has expanded into two additional disciplines: deep technical fluency in modern AI workflows, and specialization as a Game Audio Designer — shaping sound and music for interactive, playable environments.

These three threads — thirty years of hands-on analog sound experience, academically grounded audio engineering, and current AI expertise — come together visibly in the SAL BAN Monolith Engine playable on this site: a complete, browser-based groovebox, built in close collaboration with modern AI coding tools, but resting on a foundation shaped by more than 30 years of thinking in oscillators, filters, and sequencers.

SAL BAN, then, isn't an artist who had to choose between an analog past and a digital future — but one who has pursued both simultaneously for three decades, and whose current projects sit exactly at that intersection.
